So, I realised too late that I say "luminosity" instead of luminance. I mean luminance, but I guess that's what happens when you work too much with luminosity masks ;)
I’ve been into photography for almost 14 years now. I know color theory, I know harmonies-actually, I know quite a lot. But you never stop learning, right? I’ve watched tons of videos and read a bunch about it, but honestly, your video really stood out. It was super helpful and reminded me of so many things I hadn’t thought about in a while. So thanks a lot for that, really appreciate it!
Great video, Mads! I find it interesting to see how the "cycles" of RUclips photographers work over the years. You seem to have kind of a fresh start, and while the content cannot change much, the videos are getting more professional and entertaining. Don't get me wrong, your content was always great, it's just interesting to see how you now grab the next generation of photographers!
Im glad to hear you're another colorblind creator. I too have some colorblindness, and based on your dot test example I have a similar type as you. Learning how you handle photography with colorblindness is very useful to me.
With enough terrific tutorials like this, anyone interested in photography can, today, gather enough information to get started on a lifetime of bringing home the images you know are waiting for you to gather even if you don't have the $$ for photography school. All that is missing is personal feedback which many professional shooters offer online as well. Thanks for your time, care and instruction on this important topic.
Excellent. Your explanations have me going back to some of my photos with a new eye toward how the photo displayed and what I perceived in my mind's eye when I took the shot.
I have always struggled with Colour Theory but now I think I get it. You made this so interesting and easy to understand especially with all the examples you give. Superb
Love these types of videos you produce Mads as well as the educational side of the video, the additional bonus is seeing a part of your extensive collection of images which are simply beautiful. It really reinforces why, in my opinion, you truly are one of the most talented photographers out there and a real source of inspiration for anyone wishing to aspire to improving their own photography
"We can easily forgive a child who is afraid of the dark; the real tragedy of life is when men are afraid of the light ."-Plato Mads this video is perhaps my favorite of yours at least from the standpoint of the educational component related to the topic ... Well done my friend !!! Oh by the way "Intersubjectivity.......🤯🤯🤯.... Best Art
Thank you Mads for explaining colour theory like this. I have always had a hard time understanding it. I really enjoyed learning this, and I really think I finally be understand it, thanks to you.
Really great one! I would have needed this Video 10 years ago. Then I wouldn't have to re-edit all my old photos now. It took me forever to get a good feel for the right color scheme. This video comes too late for me now, but it's pure gold and great to watch!
A little bit of insight I gained in this video. Color in photography has been a mystery to me all these many years that I have been shooting. So just a little bit more insight each time I study it, will improve my knowledge and useful understanding. I gained a bit of that, so I am thankful.
Blue is the last colour in most Indo-European languages. The thinking is that there is only sea and sky, and only a few flowers in Nature, because you already have words for sky and sea, you don't need the additional colour word.
As far as deep dives on technical aspects this is top tier. The quality is super high and I’m glad I clicked. I still enjoy in the field videos the most (probably a minority) but keep this up Mads! I really really like this
Love this video Mads! I’m currently watching this and the part about the red jacket between anger and love made me laugh haha. Your humor and knowledge are great!
Outstanding video! I especially love the comments/teaching on the cultural and historical aspects of color perception. One of your best videos! (That's saying a lot, because I watch pretty much all of them)
Another great video, Mads. Stretched my mind! I now need to back through a number of my past images with new eyes. Oh, and I appreciate that you don't always put the people in your images in red or yellow. I do often feel that we have moved from including people for the sake of showing scale to what had become glorified selfies - "Hey, look at me standing in the most precarious place I could find."
Very interesting and helpful Mads. Thanks and keep them coming!!! I look forward to your new videos, as I make my way through your previous postings.:)
Thanks! Bookmarked. What follows is not a comment on your work, rather it’s where my mind wandered after watching your excellent video. 👍 I’m put off by landscape images when they’re edited to “perfection”. Especially the colors. People are too easily tempted to make, or are encouraged by how-to-edit tutorials to make all aspects of every image Spectacular! The natural world doesn’t work that way and “that’s how I envisioned it before I clicked the shutter” doesn’t change that fact. I’d rather the trend was toward revealing the realistic beauty of actually spectacular elements within the context of an otherwise well composed but naturally imperfect scene.
A masterpiece of a video. one of your best Mads. I shall be buying the ebook on light shortly! Many thanks and I shall be looking to put my camera to work in Brasil where I reside. Obrigado.
This video is pure gold. Thank you for your hard and awesome work, as always. Next month I'll be in Iceland and Madeira. A big opportunity! Oh, and I've also learned from you how to come back with (hopefully) good photos when the weather is not on your side. Thank you so much for your work. Greetings from Brazil.
Thank you Mads, this was a really good, fun and informative video. Quite deep too in some parts hahaha. I have found out that I like strong colors towards red, pink, lilac and gold! Sounds strange but when l play with the Art modes and color profiles in my OM 3 and the my other OM cameras the results can be surprisingly interesting. They don’t always look natural but I like it, it becomes more like art and the fantasy almost flies away to Narnia Your images are beautiful! I love your choice of colors and the light in your photos are magical ❤
Wow 😲 A lot of useful information. This is very important in photography and its reception. I'll have to watch this movie a few more times to get the information done 😅
Hi Mads, here you present a very powerful explanation of how you use color in your photogrphy art works. It gives a deeper understanding of your mastery of colors in your compositions and how you add menaing to photographic works. Understanding these principles will help me to understand why I do appreciate lighting of the scenes I want to photograph and how to plan shooting or ..... just learn to oberve properly and develop my way of looking and capturing. Very interesting to philosophize. Thanks for your efforts to explain. Bert
Those colour blind charts are interesting. I mentioned something similar in one of Nigels recent videos when he was asking for video ideas. I suggested using optical illusions as a representation of how your brain sees images and how that might apply to composition. I had one pop up in my feed that was a vertical framing of an angled path, doubled up side by side. Despite being identical, the one slanting towards the centre looked reasonable while the half pointing out of the frame looked like it was falling over. Brain failures are fun. :)
Mads, at 23:23 in the video there is a photo of a massive complex waterfall with multiple channels tumbling down to a river or sea loch. Two questions: 1. Where is this? I can't place it. 2. Who is the figure standing in the distance? You could not have walked there from the camera location, so if it is you, did you capture this with a drone? Thanks for another excellent video.
Very nice video! Been a while since i watched one of yours, and this was great :) Also, seeing all the shots from the Faroes and Iceland was great, we visited these places last summer and i managed to capture a few very similar shots... only generally much less well taken and edited than yours...
Really loved the explanation. I am also in the same boat of color blindness and really appreciate your explanation of color in this video. Feeling inspired :-D
Rly good explanation. My only problem is getting to this with Lightroom. After I shot the photo and trying to edit, to decide what colors to keep which to move where. 😅
Mads have u tried Luminar Neo? I fear I’m too old to master masking in PS but I appreciate ur expertise in masking. Have u considered deeper dives into ur masking flow so that I can steal 😂 ur thought process??? Ur photos are amazing!!! Talk all u want about color but without ur incredible composition color will never salvage a bad composition.
Wish I had known of your color-blindness in Antarctica, a discussion of how you compensate, what you do in post to be sure you have natural looking colors. With my color-blindness I always struggle with this and in fact never really learned my colors or color theory. They stopped trying to teach me when I was very young. Maybe a thought for a future video, especially given the number of men with the affliction.
Hi Mads. I was really interested to hear you are slightly colour blind. I am and have issues through the whole spectrum. How do you know you have the colours right? I esp miss ones that have too much magenta in the greens until they are pointed out to me. When I correct them I instantly know they look better, but it is realising it to start with.
If in doubt I make a hue/sat layer in photoshop and cranks up the saturation. Then the colours reveal themselves and I can change it to something I think is more natural :)
Hi Mads, I really like your take on color in photography. Maybe the book 'color doesn't exist' by Rob Shea is interesting to you. It's about infrared photography, but it dives in color (better wavelenghts).
Wonderful tutorial Mads, thank you! Your images are just stunning... not idle flattery, I'm older and have been a photographer since, well running dark-rooms in the early 90's lol. Not a "Pro", but as a graphic artist, musician, and connoisseur of many mediums, almost every image you share makes me appreciate God's creation more. Enjoy that I settled on the A7RV as well :D. I need to invest in some of your training materials. Do you have any content on how to sell photography? As an Automation Engineer, I've just never really thought about trying to sell my work... Have a wonderful evening, thanks for sharing.
Superb stuff Mads, have you been working with Dave Morrow?, he too is a "Genius Colour Theory Tutor". In fact, if anyone wants advanced photo knowledge on all aspects, add him to what Mads is saying, invaluable information!. "How far we have come from the Kodak film days"!. I'm getting old now and it's getting harder to keep pace with what is now possible with image processing etc. !! But, what a wonderful world of possibilities we now have!!
Kunne du ikke lave en video hvor du fortæller om hvordan du som farveblind sikrer dig at himlen ikke er den forkerte farve som lidt farveblind. Jeg har ledt og ikke kunne finde gode råd for os farveblinde
Confused by comment thatcolour temperature is obvious, and then you say that a low temperature is warm and when you make it hotter it becomes cooler ... sorry, but that is NOT obvious to me! You must he talking about the emotional feeling of light temperature, and not the actual physical temperature...
No, I say that cold colours gravitate towards blue and warm colours gravitate towards orange, but what may be slightly confusing is that the b-roll I put on top isn't exactly aligned with what I say, sorry for that.
So, I realised too late that I say "luminosity" instead of luminance. I mean luminance, but I guess that's what happens when you work too much with luminosity masks ;)
ah, we will never forgive you for that ! hahhahah ;) no worries Mads we all understand that..
Very in depth & education while still entertaining - well done
As a colorblind photographer, this was super refreshing seeing as we are both similarly unable to see the same shades
luved it MADS, like being back at University in a lecture hall...but you explained it really well....
Wow, that was amazingly helpful 😃 Thank you a lot Mads for your effort put into creating this video.
This is a great video. It has reinforced just how much I still have to learn about photography. The learning never ends and that's fantastic.
one of the best explanations on color theory I have seen. I think its the first time these theories have finally gone into my head :-) thank you!!
Thank you so much! Happy to hear :D
Agree! Well done Mads!
Very helpful, thank you Mads
Im glad to hear you're another colorblind creator. I too have some colorblindness, and based on your dot test example I have a similar type as you. Learning how you handle photography with colorblindness is very useful to me.
Very nice video Mads ❤ thank you!
Brilliant video. Thanks for posting it.

It turns a tough theory into something fun and easy to learn-kind of like how great photography turns simple scenes into art!
Just love your explanation and delivery. Thank you for sharing your wisdom on this complex and captivating topic.
What a fascinating episode, Mads.
Well done!
Thanks Mads, I find colour the hardest part of editing, so it is always good to get some sound help and guidance.
What an absolute masterclass this video was on color. Thank you for this Mads.
One of the best explanations of color theory out there! Love the philosophy section as well 🙌
Excellent. Your explanations have me going back to some of my photos with a new eye toward how the photo displayed and what I perceived in my mind's eye when I took the shot.
I have always struggled with Colour Theory but now I think I get it. You made this so interesting and easy to understand especially with all the examples you give. Superb
One of your best - I got a lot from the mix of history, philosophy, and practical examples.
A masterpiece
The one video I wanted for long. Thank you!

I love editing color and tweaking my photos for hours on end. I find color theory cool. Good video 👍
Thank you so much. The best video about color. ❤❤❤
Very, very well presented. It really is a complex subject although seems simple. However, you did a superb job explaining the concepts. Thanks!!
Great video Mads ! The mastering of color is an art in itself.
Excellent coverage of an all too often forgotten topic. Good explanations, great samples! Thanks Mads!
Excellent!!

Far and away more interesting than the review of some camera. This is one of your best! I look forward to more.
Such great inspiration on color. Learned so much. Loved the points on color balance. Thanks so much for your thoughtful presentations. ❤
Thanks a lot, Kitty! :D
Very good video with lots of information to digest - I need to replay to let it all sink in.
Thank you Mads for explaining colour theory like this. I have always had a hard time understanding it. I really enjoyed learning this, and I really think I finally be understand it, thanks to you.

The intro was hilarious
Really loved the explanation. I am also in the same boat of color blindness and really appreciate your explanation of color in this video. Feeling inspired :-D
Great video 👌👌
Too much information to get everything at once 😅
I’ll have to rewatch it several times I guess 😂

Kung!

I find it difficult to accurately colour calibrate my monitors. Do you have tips or products you recommend to do so?
My best suggestion is to watch my video on printing from last year :)
Also The more light the lesser colors.

But how do you actually EDIT colors? HSL sliders in lightroom? They don't seem very useful. How do we put theory into practice?
Superb stuff Mads, have you been working with Dave Morrow?, he too is a "Genius Colour Theory Tutor". Peter, fascinating video. During your presentation you mentioned another RUclips channel but your accent sort of muddled the name???
ASAPscience, I linked to the video :)
@@MadsPeterIversen Thanks!
Hue, Saturation, and Luminosity are orthogonal. Changing luminosity does not affect saturation. The color is simply lighter or darker.

Some women have two sets of red light receptors, and so can see variations of red that others cannot see. That must make for weird arguments ;)
My first question and please no offense is.. sorry who is telling me about this color right or wrong? Yeah in this case it really matters

Blue is hotter than Orange ...
here's a comment for you to appreciate.
And I do :D
how does a pro landscape photographer earn money BTW?
한국어 자막서비스 좀😂
So Mads, if this video covers everything a photographer need to know, the additional content then covers irrelevant stuff? 😀 just kidding
